The philosophy of New Directions is based on what we refer to as the "Three I's".

bullet

Individualization
means that each client receives an initial comprehensive evaluation and psychiatric assessment which in turn leads to the development of a unique, individualized treatment plan. This treatment plan addresses the specific needs of the individual. The focus of treatment then becomes the whole person, and the problem(s) which are preventing them from adequately functioning within their work or community environment.

Inclusion
Inclusion means that the treatment plan seeks to employ any and all treatment techniques which will benefit the client and his or her particular problem. Inclusion also refers to the notion that New Directions does not exclude clients due to special needs or due to an inflexible, rigid program structure. Within the context of an outpatient program, New Directions seeks to make its services available to the broadest spectrum of clients with alcohol and/or substance abuse problems.

Immersion
Immersion means that New Directions seeks to work with those clients assessed to be suitable for outpatient treatment by immersing them in a multi-modal treatment structure consisting of group, family and individual counseling. New Directions also links the client with supportive and ancillary services such as self-help, vocational, and educational services to support and supplement their treatment and recovery.

The New Directions treatment program is a minimum of six months to a maximum of two years, according to the needs of the individual.

THE TWELVE STEPS
While there are varied and multiple aspects to the abuser's addictive problems, there are also varied and multiple tools to be employed in an inclusive treatment program. New Directions strongly believes in the benefits and goals of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and associated Self-Help Groups, and views these programs as essential adjuncts along the continuous road to recovery. Self-help literature and meeting books are always available to facilitate a client's participation conjointly with his or her treatment at New Directions.
